Why Any Movement Is Good Movement (Even Housework Counts!)
In our home, there’s a sign in the kitchen that says: “In this kitchen we dance.” And we mean it. Whether we’re cooking, washing dishes, or just hanging out as a family, music is playing, someone’s singing karaoke, and we’re moving. Movement doesn’t have to be structured to be powerful, it just has to happen. And when it comes from a place of joy, it heals.
Too often we think exercise has to mean running miles or going to the gym. But real movement happens in everyday life, when you sweep, mop, carry laundry, stretch between meetings, or dance while cooking arroz con pollo. It all counts.
Everyday movement adds up.
- Walking to the store
- Playing with your kids or grandkids
- Dancing while cooking dinner
- Cleaning the house with music on
- Gardening, stretching, or just standing instead of sitting
These small movements improve circulation, boost your mood, help with blood sugar, and reduce stress. And for our community, busy moms, caregivers, elders, they’re often more realistic than a formal workout. Even just 10 minutes makes a difference.
Make it joyful, not stressful.
- Turn chores into dance breaks
- Go for short walks after meals
- Stretch before bed
- Choose the stairs when you can
You don’t have to do it perfectly, you just have to start. Move your body the way our ancestors did: naturally, daily, and with heart. Because every step is a step toward healing.
